Job Description

Strategic Planning: 
• Develops & implements strategic plans focused on engagement and participation of alumni, friends, faculty and staff. 
• Creates, implements, and manages relationship management plans to incorporate cutting edge & best practices to dramatically increase engagement & participation. 
• Initiates, plans and implements innovative & visionary organizational change & takes calculated risks to develop new strategies to continually expand engagement & participation across the globe. 
• Creates and implements alumni programming in support of: Colleges and Schools across the university, alumni chapters and clubs, boards, affinity groups, reunions and young alumni. Programming is designed to strategically identify & cultivate alumni and students in meaningful ways that result in engaged volunteers & donors.
• Monitors results, determines strengths and weaknesses of component programs and works with team leaders and advancement staff to modify plans and strategies to ensure achievement of program and organization goals.
• Develop geographically based strategies for bringing alumni together 
• Oversees programmatic performance evaluation, process improvement, and research.

Collaboration: 
• Reviews & proposes strategic alliances, joint ventures & key collaborations with department and other University partners to identify opportunities to integrate University strategic plan goals and the mission of the University. 
• Oversees and coaches team members regarding department collaborations. 
• Lead and grow athletic initiatives and partnerships within department and Athletics 
• Manage and execute programs that engage alumni through campus connections
• Work closely with Director of Annual Giving to partner on initiatives and build a comprehensive strategy to build engagement and fundraising strategies across teams.

Prospects & Gifts:
• Plays a primary role in developing and managing relationship strategies including the creation & implementation of world-wide programs & services for alumni, students, parents, friends and groups of volunteers and prospect/donor pools that ultimately result in increases in philanthropic contributions. 
• Maintains up-to-date current knowledge on key alumni, sharing pertinent information with gift officers as beneficial. 
• Tracks and manages the emerging alumni leaders to develop reports and monitor program results.

DUTIES

Volunteers: 
• Leads efforts to create and facilitate a vibrant culture of philanthropy, service and volunteerism which includes working with high-level volunteers to determine goals, and then identify, recruit, and coach groups of volunteers, plan and coordinate meetings, determine strategies, and report on progress. 
• Leads efforts to refine & expand the National Alumni Advisory Board & other University’s boards’ membership, involvement, and responsibilities and introduces strategies to deepen broader alumni volunteerism, providing more opportunities for alumni to become involved. 
• Oversees development & implementation of a variety of leadership training opportunities both in-person & virtually designed to meet the needs of entry level to advanced alumni leaders in locations around the world.

Events: 
• Oversees development & management of events & programs designed to expand constituent engagement & participation across the globe. 
• Reviews and approves event plans & summaries ensuring that overall goals & objectives are attained. 
• Works directly with high level volunteers & donors to ensure that individual needs are met.

Administration: 
• Manages activities related to high-level prospects, programs &/or events, and volunteer board recruitment. 
• Develops & implements processes &/or procedures. 
• Engages and reviews vendors and contracts. 
• Designs and manages volunteer programs and activities. 
• Conducts associated ongoing data analysis to determine trends, results & future plans. Assists in the development of dashboards & metrics which provide quantitative analysis of program & event outcomes.
• Reports to senior management and key collaborators. 
• Responsible for duties assigned to supervised staff. 
• Optimizes the use of technology including social media for marketing, communications & data reporting & analysis. 
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of industry best practices. 
• Articulates goals and timelines. 
• Provides creative direction to designers and writers. 
• Performs other related duties under the strategic vision of the Associate Vice President of Engagement.

Budget: 
• Drafts budget(s) for complex programs and events for entire team.
• Manages approved budget ensuring to minimize expenses while maximizing return.

Supervisory: 
• Supervises 7 or more staff. 
• Provides training to staff within or outside of immediate department or division in regard to function. 
• Leads, coaches and evaluates performance of direct reports

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND/OR WORK EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in related field and four-seven years of related experience at a university or college.

QUALIFICATIONS

- Advanced degree highly preferred. 
- Experience in leading an alumni relations department/alumni association at a university or college (or transferable experience) is highly desirable. 
- Excellent people skills, outstanding organizational and managerial abilities and excellent communication skills are required. 
- Experience with management of a volunteer board and budget management preferred. 
- Experience in management of a national alumni association would be a plus. 
- A positive attitude and sense of humor are appreciated.

COMPUTER SKILLS

Proficient computer skills, ability to use MS Office suite.
