Job Description

The Rush University College of Nursing ( invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The

Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is responsible for building and administering strong academic programs that lead the nation in quality and creativity and that address the current and future health care needs of society. This will require creating an effective infrastructure as well as the processes that will motivate the faculty to prepare clinically excellent graduates who will become lifelong learners and clinical scholars in the nursing profession. It also is anticipated that the Associate Dean will work collaboratively with the other colleges in the University and with colleagues within the Rush System for Health and other clinical partners as well as with the Chairs, Program Directors, Curriculum Committees, Evaluation Committee, Admissions Committee, Faculty Senate, other groups as appropriate to assure the delivery of an efficient and effective academic program.

The Associate Dean will be the ambassador for the College’s academic programs, representing faculty and students of the College locally and nationally. The Associate Dean for Academic Affairs is responsible for the direction of the development, implementation, and evaluation of the academic programs of the College of Nursing and is responsible to the Dean. The appointment of academic rank and salary are dependent on prior experience and achievements.

This is a 12-month faculty position.


Position responsibilities include:


1. Directs the development of courses and educational experiences which are prescribed by the curriculum.

2. Establishes and publishes a calendar of course offerings.

3. Appoints course directors in consultation with program directors and clinical departments.

4. Coordinates course scheduling in cooperation with the Office of the Registrar.

5. Coordinates the implementation of the curriculum evaluation plan adopted by the faculty.

6. Maintains curricular records as required by accrediting agencies.

7. Facilitates contracts with other clinical and educational agencies to support the instructional program.

8. Develop, monitor and implement a student recruitment plan in collaboration with the

Program Directors and Office of Admissions that is responsive to current trends in health education.

9. Assists in the development and management of the budget and resources of the College of Nursing.

10. Interprets Federal, State and University policies to the faculty as they relate to the goals and progress of the College.

11. Updates and maintains a relevant information system that supports the faculty and curriculum databases.

12. Collaborates with the Program Directors on issues that affect the implementation of the academic program.

13. Coordinates the College's need for University academic services as appropriate.

14. Collaborates with the academic units of Rush University and the clinical departments

in Rush University Medical Center as appropriate.

15. Serves in the Dean's stead in College matters.

16. Ex-officio member of the CON Admissions and Progressions Committee.


1. Collaborates in the development of research protocols for training grants and education evaluation grants.

2. Publishes scholarly papers.


1. Participates in clinical practice in one's respective professional specialty, as appropriate.

2. Serves as a consultant for nursing education locally and nationally.

3. Serve as a resource and consultant to faculty regarding student advising and college and university policies and procedures and support services.

Position qualifications include:

• Earned doctorate (e.g., DNP, PhD)

• Maintains national specialty certification as appropriate

• At least 5 years academic nursing experience

• Current licensure (or eligible) in the State of Illinois
