Job Description

The School of Public Health, at the University of Nevada, Reno, seeks innovative candidates for the Marketing Communications Specialist. The Specialist is responsible for developing and implement marketing and communications plans that support the strategic goals of the School of Public Health and its affiliated Schools and Centers. The position coordinates web communications, print and other marketing services, and serves as a marketing liaison between the School of Public Health and other University units. The Specialist works closely with and follows the direction set up the University's Office of Marketing and Communications to align with the overall marketing strategy and priorities of the University. The position functions as a partnership between the School of Public Health and the Office of Marketing & Communications. This position reports directly to the Dean of the School of Public Health.

Duties Include

Marketing-Based Writing

  • Develop, formalize, and execute a marketing plans for the School of Public Health and its constituent units in line with the marketing strategy of the University, as established by the Office of Marketing & Communications; analyze and assess the effectiveness of messages, collateral, and distribution channels and revise strategies as needed

  • Coordinate, write, and print calendars, monthly e-newsletters, and/or science-based magazines and publications

  • Coordinate printing projects and work with the Office of Marketing & Communications and external vendors for the design and printing of brochures and/or the creation of other promotional items for national, international and regional advertising

Project Coordination

  • Lead and/or participate in meetings and discussions to identify and prioritize current and new projects as well as develop, formalize, and execute strategic communications and marketing plans in line with the marketing strategy of the University

  • Attend School meetings to update administrators and staff regarding projects, campaigns, and concerns

  • Serve as liaison between the Office of Marketing and Communications and the School of Public Health to ensure that client needs are met, that projects benefit the University as a whole, and that the University’s marketing and communications guidelines are followed

  • Manage other marketing projects such as photo shoots; fundraising, donor, and alumni campaigns; and requests for information/stories from press, journals, research organizations, the Governor’s Office, and/or other stakeholders; collaborate with the School’s Directors of Development on fund-raising opportunities

  • Supervise assigned temporary and/or undergraduate and graduate student workers

Marketing Education and Outreach

  • Develop relationships with media for better coverage of the assigned School’s events and initiatives; work with Marketing and Communications to publicize initiatives

  • Track and monitor media coverage

  • Identify target markets and funding opportunities

  • Manage the School’s presence on social media across multiple platform

  • Develop internal communications platforms and strategies to communicate with internal stakeholders and promote awareness of School branding efforts

  • Conceptualize, develop, and produce a variety of marketing and communications materials to reach key internal and external audiences to announce new initiatives; collaborate on projects with the Office of Marketing & Communications and outside entities

  • Manage social media for the School of Public Health through an integrated approach with the Office of Marketing & Communications

  • Disseminate information to students via internal channels such as blogs and email

  • Work with the Dean to identify high-priority projects and/or research papers; provide technical editing and or quality control services to faculty and/or researchers, as needed

  • Provide leadership for or serve on School and University committees as appropriate

Web Publishing:

  • Migrate existing or develop new departmental websites within the content management system in support of strategic School initiatives and priority efforts, following the Web practices and approach set by the Office of Marketing & Communications; oversee management of School and departmental websites

  • Develop project strategies and timelines for developing or redeveloping School-affiliated websites in line with priorities set by the Dean of Science and Marketing and Communications

  • Write, edit, develop and publish content on relevant e-vites, e-newsletters, news stories, and events websites

  • Analyze performance of School of Public Health websites using analytics tools and optimize sites for target online traffic and campaigns using search engine optimization (SEO) and search engine marketing techniques (SEM)

  • Maintain existing Web pages where coding skills are required to maintain layouts or new content development is needed, and provide oversight for CMS websites in the School

  • Coordinate website maintenance and provide training and support to the website owners

  • Work with the Office of Marketing & Communications to suggest improvements to the CMS functionality and to develop communication and training initiatives

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and three (3) years of related work experience OR

Master's Degree two (2) years of related work experience.

Related Experience: Market-based and/or journalistic writing; media and/or public relations; strategic marketing and/or communications; website development systems.
