Population Health Sciences Program
The University of Illinois at Chicago is the largest public research university in Chicago, committed to providing comprehensive care, education, and research to the people of Illinois and beyond. The Population Health Sciences Program (PHSP) is a program within the Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs developed to support enterprise-level leadership for healthcare delivery. Under the direction of Jerry A. Krishnan, MD, PhD, the PHSP supports the mission of UI Health by providing strategic, technical, and operational support for developing, testing, and implementing population-specific programs designed to achieve health equity.
The PHSP staff have diverse professional backgrounds, including public health, design, engineering, informatics, medicine, nursing, nutrition, statistics, clinical research, the arts, and epidemiology.
The PHSP facilitates research led by faculty across the health science colleges at UIC and other organizations throughout the U.S. Since 2011, we have facilitated awards in excess of $65 million from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), foundations, and other funders.
The Recruitment Specialist within the PHSP works as part of research teams in Chicago and elsewhere in the United States on internally and externally sponsored research programs. The Specialist will manage and direct the coordination and timely handling of recruitment and retention efforts for clinical research studies, and, in collaboration with study investigators and staff, will develop and implement recruitment and participant engagement strategies. The primary role of the Specialist will be conducting telephone based follow-up calls to participants recruited for a large pragmatic clinical trial. The Specialist will conduct follow-up calls on a daily basis and will work with the investigators to ensure participant retention rates are met, and call performance is presented and reviewed regularly.
Thoroughly evaluate study protocols with study team to assess target population, eligibility criteria, and recruitment goals.
Develop plans for engaging specified population in clinical research, and for identifying and screening potential participants for studies.
Schedule, organize, and complete telephone based follow-up calls involving the administration of follow-up questionnaires for clinical trials
Assist in the preparation and presentation of reports to monitor participant retention and outreach efforts
Conduct outreach activities to identify participants for clinical studies and engage the community in the research process via telephone, in-person health fairs, community events, etc.
Conduct surveys to screen participants for enrollment and obtain informed consent as described in study protocols.
Maintain accurate records of all recruitment and engagement activities and provide detailed reports to the study team at regular intervals.
Provide guidance on best practices and lessons learned from recruitment efforts across protocols to investigators at UIC and collaborators across the U.S.
Provide relevant feedback to community and stakeholders to broaden interest in research and community engagement with UIC.
Ensure that all recruitment and retention activities are in compliance with study protocols, as well as federal, state, institutional and sponsor-specific policies.
Assist investigators in organizing data for grant progress reports, meetings, publications, and presentations.
Job Knowledge & Skills, Education, Experience
Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, mental health, psychology, pharmaceutical sciences, social sciences, public health, or a related field preferred.
Demonstrated ability to provide customer service through at least one year of experience in a position involving work with patients, customers, and the general public.
Familiarity with medical terminology and procedures preferred.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines. Ability to work in a flexible environment with shifting priorities. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Proficiency in English and Spanish strongly preferred.
